Tiger Woods insists there’s “zero connection” between the neck spasms playing havoc with his golf swing and his Nov. 27 car accident.

Woods said during a news conference Monday that his neck started bothering him two weeks before the Masters, his first competition in five months. He brushed it off as “no big deal” and believed he could play through the pain. That changed on Sunday at The Players Championship, where Woods’ creaky neck locked up. That prevented him from making his usual forceful turn on the ball on even a routine shot, and he was forced to withdraw after six holes.

“I’m at a point now where I just can’t go anymore,” he said.

“I want to practice, I want to play, I want to compete, but this is not allowing me to do the things that I need to do on my golf swing to hit the proper shots. I need to get to where I can do that again.”

Woods said he’s been taking anti-inflammatory drugs, but they have not helped. He plans to have an MRI when he returns to Orlando, Fla.

In November, Woods was briefly hospitalized after he crashed his Cadillac Escalade into a fire hydrant and a tree outside his home, resulting in a sore neck and a cut lip.

On Monday, Woods insisted he can deal with the sharp, shooting pain, which he feels in the right side of his neck, but cannot deal with the spasms that affect his ability to turn his head.

“For me not to play all 18 holes, that was as angry and as frustrated as I’ve been in a long time,” Woods said of Sunday’s abbreviated round. It was his first withdrawal from a tournament since the Nissan Open at Riviera in 2006.

Woods said it wasn’t until this weekend that he felt he needed more serious treatment.

“It’s possible one of the reasons I think this thing flared up is because I wasn’t conditioned to it,” he said. “I’d been away from the game for such a long time, then came back and ramped up really quickly in order to try and play the Masters. The body wasn’t quite ready for that.”

After tying for fourth in the Masters, Woods looked lost on the course as he missed the cut at Quail Hollow on April 30 with the highest 36-hole score of his career.

Woods has played little like the golfer who collected his 82nd title worldwide in Australia six months ago, just before his personal life became a national punchline.

“I think it’s just once I’m able to do the work on the range and get comfortable, then all shots are fine,” he said. “But I need to do the work.”

Woods spent some of his time at The Players Championship denying speculation that he is about to leave Hank Haney, his swing coach since 2004. He said at Aronimink Golf Club that he was working on his swing.

“I talked to Hank about some of the stuff. We’re still working on it,” he said. “We have a lot of work to do. I can’t make the movements that I made before because of the neck. I need to get healthy to play the proper way.”

For now, his schedule is “up in the air” and likely will be shaped based on what the MRI reveals.

Woods was noncommittal about playing the U.S. Open on June 17-20.

“I’m trying everything I can to get back as soon as I can,” he said.

Woods was in suburban Philadelphia to promote the AT&T National July 1-4. He is the defending champion in the tournament, which has moved to Newtown Square for two years. He also wants to defend his title at the Memorial Tournament the first weekend in June. If Woods feels healthy and gets good news on his MRI, he expects to compete in both events.

“I am committed,” he said. “Unfortunately I haven’t been able to practice like I want to, spend the hours that I used to to get better. And hopefully I can do that, soon.

Not many people stood by Tiger Woods as his personal life was falling apart. And even fewer sponsors seemed to be by his side.

Nike, however, can count themselves among the loyal. Which is probably why they’re the first sponsor to feature Tiger in a commercial, which will air beginning Wednesday night.

“We support Tiger and his family as he returns to competitive golf,” said Nike spokesman Derek Kent. “The ad addresses his time away from the game using the powerful words of his father.”

The ad, seen below (via Darren Rovell at CNBC), features Tiger — in black and white — staring into the camera with the familiar voice of his father asking questions in a presumably omniscient manner.

Earl Woods says, “Tiger, I am more prone to being inquisitive, to promote discussion,” Earl says in the spot. “I want to find out what your thinking was. I want to find out what your feelings are. And did you learn anything?”

This isn’t the first time Tiger and Nike have used his father in commercials; one of the most awesome displays of marketing came around Father’s Day in 2008 when they played Earl’s voice over clips of the two practicing golf and some sentimental music (the “You’ll never meet someone as mentally tough as you …” commercial; embedded below the new ad).

The only issue here is that whereas Nike harnessed their ability to market and combined it with a very touching appeal to fathers and sons — while the appeal to second chances here does make sense, something about the commercial as a whole comes off a tad bit off.

Is it the combination of appealing to the consumer for forgiveness amid a pile of swooshiness all while using Earl’s voice? Well, it might be. Having said that, Nike stuck by Tiger throughout this whole sordid mess, so, by all means, advertise away.

Pre-tournament press conferences were in full-swing for the 2009 Masters and as the golfers fielded questions from the media, sports bettors have shifted into full-on research mode trying to dig up the gem that will lead to a win when the final putts are made Sunday afternoon.

He has recorded nine Top 10 finishes in 14 Masters Tournaments and shoots an average score of 70.98 per round and he is favored here for good reason. If his putting is on this week he will likely be near the top of the leader board after the cut but the test from here is trying to find a challenger that might be the upset story of 2009.

Moving onto the rest of the betting options is where things really start to get interesting. The group of young guns entering play this week has received a lot of attention and the question from a betting perspective is whether the likes of Rory McIlroy, Anthony Kim and Camilo Villegas can overcome their lack of experience and out-shoot some of the veterans.

Kim showed a lot of poise in his interview Tuesday and in the right matchup or prop-betting opportunity could be worth a look. Kim has averaged 70.79 per round in his five starts so far this year and has a lot of confidence heading into his first Masters. Of the youth movement, Kim gets the nod for most likely to surprise at Augusta.

The Bank of Ireland’s three-year-endorsement deal with Harrington is due to end in May and the bank has given notice that it will not be renewing it.

But in this case, the termination of his contract has nothing to do with Harrington’s behaviour – or even with the difficulty he is having in winning any further tournaments since his double triumph in 2008 when he claimed both the Open and PGA majors (Titleist 2010 AP2 Irons).

It has ben reported that in return for an annual payment in the region of €400,000, Harrington wore the Bank’s name on his shirt and also played in three Bank of Ireland corporate outings per year.

The Ryder Cup star is believed to have 11 other companies who sponsor him in one way or another.

Rather, says the Bank, it has everything to do with the recession and its need to cut costs and show that it is doing so in the face of a critical public examination at a moment in time when the British taxpayer’s ownership of the bank has risen to 15.7%. (TaylorMade R9 Irons is on a big sale.)

“When he changes a swing, he wants to get better. He will start getting better, it’s just like that. Golf is just like life, when you make a mistake, you learn from your mistake and move on stronger. That’s the way he is, and his Nike.

“As a human being everyone has faults, makes mistakes and sins. We all do. But, we move on when we make a mistake and learn from it. I am upset the way media treated him like he’s a criminal. He didn’t kill anybody, he didn’t do anything illegal. They’ve being carrying on from thanksgiving until now, that’s not right!”

“People don’t understand that Tiger Woods has a very good heart and soul,” she said of the 34-year-old golf pro. “He tried to improve himself… When you make a mistake you learn from it and move on, that’s the way life is, that’s a human being. We’re not good, and he never claimed he was God. If anyone tells me to condemn him, I say look at yourself first. I would look in their eyes and tell them you’re not God!”

Questioned about her emotions after watching Tiger’s statement, she reflected: “(I’m) upset. This thing is a family matter. It’s not easy to be him. (People) go to work 8 to 5 and go home to have a life with the family. Tiger can’t do that.

There’s definitely a lesson here for all: don’t cut Tiger, because mama Woods will get her claws out if you do!
