Payne Steward unfortunely passed away in 1999, shortly after his victory in the United States Open, stunned the golf world, and in particular the family that is the PGA TOUR. The Tour collectively mourned not only a champion who had won three major championships and eight other events, but someone they cherished as a friend who personified all that was good and special about the game of golf.

The Tour went out to find a way to honor Stewart and created the Payne Steward Award, presented annually to a player who shares and symbolizes Stewart’s respect for golf’s traditions, his belief in the game’s historic commitment to charitable giving, and the professional manner in which he represented the game, both on and off the course.

PGA TOUR Commissioner Tim Finchem in announcing the creation of the award said about Payne Steward, “Payne was a great champion, a gentleman and a devoted husband and father. He will always be remembered as a very special competitor and one who contributed enormously to the positive image of professional golf. If we’re not playing golf, I don’t know how else we can honor him.”

Stewart’s memory stems from its corporate credo, which closely aligns with the very traditional values of golf that Stewart himself embraced: honesty, respect, fairness, integrity and a total commitment to strive for the best possible performance.

His clothes were different, from the NFL sporting days to the classic plus fours, he has been one of the few golfers of any generation to completely change styles and make it work. He was a classy guy in every sense of the word.

If Stewart was around today, who knows how many more major championships the straight-hitter would have claimed.  When the putter was hot, his game was as tough as anyone, and watching him compete with the talent out there now would have been a treat for all of us.

Since his accident and the fallout from his alleged affairs, the great Tiger Woods has fallen off his pedestal, proving he’s not the icon that people worshiped on the golf course and off. He’s human… perhaps more so than his fans want to accept.

In news stories, sports’ columns and blogs, Tiger’s misdeeds — and perceived misdeeds — are being badgered about in both print and online at a dizzying pace.

From an unfortunate early morning accident on Nov. 27 that involved Woods’ SUV hitting a tree and fire hydrant, a golf club, broken glass and facial cuts, the Tiger saga has mushroomed into a major league scandal involving an alleged affair with not just one, but maybe as many as a dozen women.

As the major media continues to dig even deeper into the mess, it’s likely that additional sordid details of Tiger’s adventures with “the other” women will surface. So far, public reaction has been mixed although some of his colleagues in the professional golf ranks have criticized Woods’ alleged dallying with a veritable lineup of mistresses over a long period of time.

If he can survive the intense public scrutiny in the coming weeks and months and the questions that remain unanswered, perhaps the world’s greatest golfer — not, alas, the world’s greatest human being, it appears — Woods can survive the ordeal, sans his wife and two kids if the rumors are true that wife Erin purchased a home in her native Sweden and has filed for divorce from her now “tainted” husband.

Forget about his outstanding golf career for now: For the present and immediate future, it’s a course set on damage control for Tiger Woods.

She is a student-athlete at University of New Mexico, not Mexico State (which I wrote) or New Mexico State (which I think I meant). In any event, both were incorrect.

Don’t know how I got those two schools mixed up, but I did. As Andrew noted in his e-mail, New Mexico State just started its women’s soccer program this year, finishing over .500 and competing in the WAC tournament in the team’s inaugural season.
