Tiger Woods recently announced his return to golf and he will aim for a fifth Green Jacket. Will you watch Tiger Woods at the Masters online this year? I certainly will since I discovered this great software that gains access to one of the most prestigious events in all of golf.

The news has been whispered, pondered and pontificated about Woods return making this year’s Masters at Augusta National a definite must see. Even with an almost half-year layoff from playing tournament golf, the odds makers still designate Woods as the front-runner favorite. It’s going to be an exciting tournament watching all of the world’s best players including the 2009 champion, Angel Cabrerra, bring their A games to match Woods at this storied tournament teeing off from April 8-11. It is the first major tournament of the 2010 season and a great venue for Woods to launch his comeback.

You can catch all the fabulous sports action – and the drama – when you get a hold of this software mentioned. It can easily be downloaded from the Internet and just as easily installed on either a Mac or PC. All you need for your own best spot in the “gallery” for a view at Tiger’s return is a high-speed Internet connection through either DSL or cable. Then you’ll catch all the action as the elite of golf including greats like Ernie Ells, David Duval, Sergio Garcia, Vijay Singh, Phil Mickelson and many more international stars look to match their best game to Tiger’s.

This software is a fabulous feature added to the laptop of any busy, traveling golf aficionado since no matter where you are during Master’s week you’ll have the best seat in the house to catch all the action. High speed Internet connections are available to guests at almost every hotel in the world these days.

This way, you’ll catch Tiger making that unbelievable shot from behind a tree that finds its way onto a green.

Jim Furyk

Jim Furyk hasn’t won on the PGA TOUR since the 2007 RBC Canadian Open. This is more anomaly than anything else. He racks up top-10s the way that lesser players rack up cuts. He is a four-tool player (out of a possible five). Furyk will never be long but then again, he never has been.

He is accurate off the tee, a terrific ball striker, has a wonderful short game and is a tremendous putter. Four out of five ain’t bad. Furyk has a killer instinct, dedication and heart. On top of all that, he is annoyed and tired of answering questions about his drought. Look for Jim to get into the winner’s circle early this season.

The other player to watch is Adam Scott. Until Greg Norman gave him the nod for the Presidents Cup, Scott was mired in a slump. Since then, he has played much better, winning for the first time as a professional in Australia and more importantly, finding old form. Scott and Furyk have been perennially ranked in the top-10 in the world over the last decade for a reason. They will show you that reason again in 2010.

Padraig Harrington

No name is more obvious for this list than Harrington’s. By the end of the 2009 season, he finally appeared comfortable with the swing changes that he surprisingly made following his wildly successful 2008 season in which he won two majors and took home PGA TOUR Player of the Year honors.

After struggling for the majority of 2009, Harrington was in serious contention each of the four weeks during the PGA TOUR Playoffs for the FedExCup. A startling stat: He failed to break 70 only three times in the 16 rounds of the Playoffs. Like Phil Mickelson, Harrington didn’t want the season to end.

Make no mistake — he will be more determined than ever in 2010 to get back into the winner’s circle. I can see plenty of Harrington vs. Mickelson battles this year.

David Toms

There are so many candidates — Luke Donald, Anthony Kim, Padraig Harrington, Ernie Els. Hunter Mahan and Jim Furyk, to name a few — but my vote goes to David Toms. He came out with a renewed enthusiasm in 2009 and did everything but hoist the 13th trophy of his PGA TOUR career.

Toms tied for second three times last year, including in his first start at the Sony Open in Hawaii where he also won in 2007.

He’s the same steady player, ranking fourth in driving accuracy, 20th in greens in regulation and seventh in scoring average. Not to mention, this is a Ryder Cup year and Toms would like nothing better to play for Corey Pavin in Wales.

Steve Marino

I could have gone with someone easy like Padraig Harrington, Jim Furyk or Tim Clark. But I like Steve Marino’s chances. He has a combined 15 top-10s the last three years and was a runner-up once each of the last two seasons — in 2009 at Colonial, where he lost in a playoff, and in 2008 in Cancun, where he shot 64-66 on the weekend.

Statistically, Marino was 35th in driving distance and 21st in greens in regulation in 2009, so it’s no wonder he ranked ninth in scoring average. More importantly, he’s got a healthy amount of confidence and the ability to back it up.

On six occasions, Marino shot 65 or better in 2009, and he ranked seventh on TOUR in par-5 performance. If there’s one area he definitely needs to improve, though, it’s his performance in the final round — he ranked 13th in scoring average before the cut and 16th in Round 3, but fell to 83rd in the final round.

NATIONWIDE PROMOTION: Michael Sim earned an instant promotion to the PGA Tour when he won his third Nationwide Tour event. The timing could not have been worse, coming right before the FedEx Cup playoffs.

As a result, Sim played only one time on the PGA Tour, on a sponsor exemption to Turning Stone. The Viking Classic was canceled, and he chose not to play Disney.

Should the rule be changed to create an automatic spot for such players?

Not necessarily.

Biggest Off-course Stories of 2009

The instant promotion is more about the following year than the current year. The payoff for Sim is that he is fully exempt for the 2010 season, meaning he is automatically in The Players Championship and is not subjected to the reshuffle that other Nationwide Tour and Q-school graduates face.

What not give Sim instant status? The tour wants to be sure the current crop of Nationwide/Q-school players have every chance to play an entire season without being bumped by someone who spent most of the year at a lower level.

TOP TEN: Europe uses the world ranking to decide half of its Ryder Cup team – not a player’s ranking, rather how many raw points the player has earned in the year leading to the matches.
That might be the best way to determine which players have had the best year in golf.

Using only points earned in 2009, the top three remain the same – Tiger Woods with 604.54 points, followed by Phil Mickelson at 367.29 and Steve Stricker at 333.57. Lee Westwood (299.54) and Rory McIlroy (283.06) round out the top five.

They are followed by Paul Casey, Jim Furyk, Kenny Perry, Sean O’Hair and Retief Goosen.
This also shows who had a poor season, for only three players in the top 50 failed to earn at least 100 ranking points – Vijay Singh, Ben Curtis and Robert Karlsson, who missed the heart of the season with an eye injury.

DIVOTS: Rory McIlroy plans to make his debut as a PGA Tour member at the Accenture Match Play Championship, with his road to the Masters going through the Honda Classic, Doral and the Houston Open. Also on his schedule are the Quail Hollow Championship and the Memorial. … Tiger Woods lost more world ranking points (485.82) than any other player earned last year. … Six players under 50 took a one-time exemption from career money to keep their PGA Tour card for the 2009 season. Only one of them, Bob Estes, finished inside the top 125 on the money list. The others were Jeff Maggert (128), David Duval (130), Chris DiMarco (135), Tom Lehman (142), who turned 50 in March, and Brad Faxon (221).

STAT OF THE WEEK: Ernie Els failed to win a golf tournament for the first time since 1990.

Few golf courses elicit such a wide range of descriptions like TPC Sawgrass, home of THE PLAYERS Championship. Several players were asked this year to describe the course in one word. Padraig Harrington served up “exciting.” Woods opted for “tricky.” Paul Goydos called it “surprising.”

Geoff Ogilvy was stumped. He is considered among the most eloquent players on the PGA TOUR, someone who puts great thought into every answer and usually nails it. On this occasion, he couldn’t come up with the proper description.

Five days later, Ogilvy was headed for another middling result. He has never finished in the top 10 at THE PLAYERS Championship, missing as many cuts as he has made. Walking off the 14th tee, Ogilvy saw the reporter who had asked him the question earlier in the week and called him over.

Blue Moon Rings 2010 in New York

“Annoying,” he said, with no context, although it was quite clear what he meant.

Stewart Cink knew he would get his fill of questions about Woods during the Chevron World Challenge in December, and he didn’t shy away from answering them — on Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday.

After the third round, and another batch of questions, Cink called a reporter over to where he was signing autographs.

“Are you going to be writing stories about Tiger?” he said quietly. “Could you somehow work in there that it’s been real easy for everyone in our country — including PGA TOUR players, writers, TV people, everybody — to whip up on Tiger? But let’s not forget that we all make mistakes. While it’s easy to tee off on somebody in the press, they deserve for us to remember that we also make mistakes.”

And with that, he reached for another flag and kept signing.

One of the most poignant moments of 2009 came on the Monterey Peninsula for Phil Mickelson’s caddie, only it wasn’t a tournament.

Jim “Bones” Mackay helped arrange a golf trip for close friend Bob Carson, father of Eve Carson, the North Carolina student body president who was shot to death in 2008. They wanted him to get away for a week and spend time with friends on a golf course.

As Carson later noted, it was a trip of incomparable camaraderie, a time for sharing burdens, some larger than others, and a chance for a friend to be lifted up. Mackay said the first round of golf was at Cypress Point on a peaceful morning of stunning beauty. What took his breath away, however, was when he walked into the pro shop.

By coincidence, the staff that day was dressed in a shade of Carolina blue.

5. I am such an idiot. At Winged Foot in 2006, Phil Mickelson had three major titles on his resume and the chance to finally land the big one that got away. Phil had suffered U.S. Open near-misses at Pinehurst, Bethpage Black and Shinnecock Hills, and all he needed was a par at the 18th to win this Open, or a bogey to force a playoff. You know the rest. It was Jean Van de Velde all over again, only with trees instead of grandstands and a water hazard.

Mickelson blocked a tee shot left off a hospitality tent, took two to get out of the trees, blasted out of a bunker and made a double-bogey 6 to blow the Open in New York, where he is a huge crowd favorite. His subsequent self-effacing quote, “I am such an idiot,” said it all and made Mickelson the new poster boy of major championships squandered. At least in golf, that’s only a temporary position. (For details, see Colin Montgomerie, Scott Hoch, Greg Norman or Kenny Perry, to name a few.)

6. The Battle of Augusta. What if … Masters chairman Hootie Johnson had just ignored the letter from Martha Burk of the National Council of Women’s Organizations? We might have been spared a year of unseemly — and ultimately wasted — animosity over the absence of women at Augusta National Golf Club. Instead, Johnson hit back, and his comment that the club wouldn’t change its policies “at the point of a bayonet” started a year-long war that led up to the 2003 Masters.

Burk went from relative unknown to a regular guest on national news shows, and she enjoyed strong backing from the New York Times, which editorially urged Tiger Woods to boycott the tournament, USA Today and the Washington Post. When Burk shrewdly began to apply gender-based political pressure to advertisers, Johnson outflanked her by canceling all tournament sponsorships. The battle dragged on for months, and Burk promised that picketing protestors in Augusta “will give those good old boys the vapors.”

Long saga short: Burk was denied permits to demonstrate near Augusta National’s main gate and had to move the protest elsewhere. What protest? Fewer than a hundred demonstrators showed up. Score a win for Johnson as the Masters went on uninterrupted. Two years later, the tournament sponsors were back on board.
The only real winners, as usual, were the lawyers. Burk sued the city of Augusta over its protest ordinance and won a favorable ruling from the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals, which ordered the city to pay $150,000 in NCWO legal fees. When the court refused to hear an appeal, city officials negotiated a $120,000 settlement.

7. American idols. The U.S. Ryder Cup team was at rock bottom going into the 2008 Ryder Cup, having won only one of the last six Cups, including consecutive 9.5-point thumpings in 2004 and 2006. So captain Paul Azinger drew up a new points system and grouped his players in four-man pods according to personality type, which built familiarity during practice rounds. Azinger made all the right moves as his relaxed-but-determined lineup (minus the injured Tiger Woods) defeated Europe by a satisfying five-point margin to regain the Cup.

J.B. Holmes, one of Azinger’s picks, came up big in singles, as did Kentucky native Kenny Perry, who heeded Azinger’s advice on how to minimize the pressure of playing in front of his vocal home-state supporters.

Lightly regarded Boo Weekley was unbeaten and provided the moment that symbolized Team USA’s fun approach. In his Sunday’s singles match, he hilariously galloped off the first tee riding his driver like a pony. The enthusiastic fans responded to Azinger’s request to become the 13th man and gave the event a loud, football game-like atmosphere. “After this,” Golf Channel analyst Steve Flesch said, “the next tour event is going to seem like a member-guest.”

President George Bush invited the victorious team to the White House, where a wowed Weekley, who had an upcoming hunting trip planned, had the last word. “The only thing that would top this year off any better for me,” he said, “would be to go out and get me a big deer.”

I spoke with the wedge guru on Friday, and here are his answers to some of the most interesting submissions.

How you would compare and contrast the designs and technologies used in Callaway’s wedges with those from other major brands. What makes the Callaway wedges different?

A lot of people copied the wedge designs we developed at Cleveland Golf years ago, like the 588 wedges, but I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to do something a little bit different.

When I had the opportunity to get back into club making, and start making wedges for Callaway, I wanted to use the purest form of making irons, and that means forging. I also wanted to use the softest material to give golfers the most feel, and that’s 1020 carbon steel. Then, I wanted to have the best forging house in the world, which is in Japan, make the wedges. After putting all those things together, we’ve been having a great time making irons and wedges here at Callaway.

But what makes our wedges really different from other manufacturers’ is the aggressive groove we have developed in conjunction with Phil Mickelson.

Phil always tests a new wedge by hitting 40-yard shots, and he hit that shot pretty hard. The first shot he hit using a a super-aggressive groove we created for him made a white trail of cover material up the face of the club. He looked down and said, “Yep, that’s my Mack Daddy groove.” We loved that, and so we named our groove the Mack Daddy.

With the new JAWS wedges (above), I wanted to reduce the silhouette of the wedge when you’re looking down at address, and I wanted a smaller head. I think that gives golfers a feeling that they can get the leading edge under the ball more easily. We also implemented a very aggressive C-grind in the sole which makes it very versatile.

For the amateur, how would you go about trying and picking a particular sole grind for wedges?

It all depends upon how much you practice and how many different shots you want to be able to hit with your wedge, especially a high-lofted wedge.

If you’re the type of player who likes to open the face and hit higher, softer-landing shots, then look for a grind that supplies heel relief but doesn’t add too much bounce in the process. Opening the face automatically adds bounce, but some grinds create more than others.

If you don’t practice that often, going with the grind that supplies more bounce will help you get out of the sand more easily.

Every wedge needs to have some positive amount bounce so it can slide, rather than dig, through the turf. Remember, you never want to hit a wedge shot using your leading edge, you always want to use the sole as the contact point to the ground.

What is your honest opinion of the upcoming USGA groove rule changes?

I don’t think the new groove rules are necessary. Instead of doing something with the grooves, we have always felt, as have Jack Nicklaus and Sandy Tatum (a former President of the USGA), that they should do something with the ball instead. Creating a “tour ball” that spins more would reduce the average driving distances, put a greater emphasis on hitting good shots, and keep historically significant golf courses playable without adding excessive length.

Originally, the USGA gave us exact guidelines about the new grooves, but it didn’t want to confine us to making only a V groove. So, in July 2009 we developed a groove that met their specifications and brought it to the USGA for approval. The USGA told us the intent of the rule was to reduce spin, and that while the new groove complied with the rules, it created too much spin. We told them that they gave us a rule, and we followed it. It took us about $300,000 to develop that groove, but the USGA said, “No.”

Callaway is always going to design to the Nth degree of performance, otherwise somebody else is going to do it. That’s what competition is about. But the USGA changed the rule again anyway. It’s as if we’re playing a football game and as we’re about score a touchdown they moved the goal line and made the field 110 yards.

So we had to go back and develop another new groove, which made us a little bit late in getting the clubs to our tour players.

Look, I don’t fault the USGA for what they are trying to do. I don’t even fault the management of the USGA, they have a hard job, but I just think changing the ball would have been the best way to go about doing.

Any insight on trying to get as much spin as possible from conforming equipment in 2010?

Because the USGA is allowing all manufacturers to design different condition of competition grooves, you’re going to have to look at what the different manufacturers are going to provide. They are all going to be different. It is too early to give any opinion about other companies’ condition of competition grooves, but I’m sure looking forward to seeing them.

With our groove, we reduced the area between the grooves, and therefore we had to reduce the capacity of the grooves. The rules create a ratio of the space between the grooves in the capacity of the grooves. Callaway decided to go the route of putting more grooves on the face. Through our studies we learned that the more edges you can put on the ball the more friction and spin you can put on the ball. Hence the name of the new wedge line, JAWS.

What news can we talk about golf stars? Let’s check out new odds and sods of these hot golf stars.

Tiger-mania

Australia has gone beserk since Tiger Woods touched down in Melbourne to contest this week’s Aussie Masters. And one punter is so convinced that the world number one is a shoo-in for victory that he’s wagered 100,000 Aus dollars on a Woods win. Sportingbet Australia betting manager Bill Richmond said the man had placed the wager at 2.60 and stood to take home 260,000 Aus dollars if the 14-time major winner triumphed at Kingston Heath. “We’ve seen a huge increase in terms of the number and sizes of bet from the punters. Certainly it’s more than double what we would normally do,” added Richmond. In the UK, Sky Bet are particularly keen to dodge Woods and are an industry shortest even money about the great man.

Gorge Lucas!

Lucas Parsons was once a standing dish in the Aussie Masters. Not any more though. These days he runs his own cafe and earlier this year took part in the Australian version of MasterChef with golf/food fans offering regular updates on his progress in chatroom forums. “Lucas got into the top three in last night’s Masterchef with a Chinese dish of Braised Oyster Mushrooms with Tofu. The judges declared it as “subtle but memorable” said one poster. And a few days later… “Another success for him last night. During the judges tasting they complemented the chicken dish he made.” And there was a genuine feeling of aggrievement when he crashed out. “Shame to see our boy knocked out of Masterchef last night. Personally I thought he was robbed. The challenge was to create 2 pies, and (his rival) Julie didn’t even produce that.” Lucas attended the pre-tournament Masters Gala dinner alongside Tiger Woods and Shane Warne on Tuesday night. And what makes us think he’s more a breast than a leg man?

Mickelson the Tiger slayer

Here’s a stat for you. The last seven times Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson have been paired together, Lefty has shot the lowest score five times, with one tie when they both shot 64s. One of Mickelson’s moral victories over Woods came at Augusta earlier this year and punters were sniffing out his Augusta odds after he again claimed the scalp of Tiger in the HSBC Champions in Shanghai last weekend. Mickelson, the Green Jacket winner in both 2004 and 2006, is as short as 6/1 in places but VC Bet and Paddy Power are both offering 8/1. Tiger is the 5/2 favourite but the idea that Augusta is his playground might have to be revised. The world number one has won just one of the last seven Masters and it appears the toughening up of Augusta has gone against him.

Judas Priest Pt II

Good news. Judas Priest guitarist KK Downing liked the feature we did on him and has invited us down for another game next year when the second nine of his course opens. Since our interview and round of golf we can’t stop hearing references to Judas Priest. BBC 6 Music are currently running a Heavy Metal World Cup – a knock-out competition decided by debate that will crown the greatest metal band of all time. Judas Priest have already beaten old rivals Def Leppard in the first round and now have a very winnable last eight clash against Slayer. And whilst flicking through Sky last night the Comedy Channel were showing a vintage set from the late, great Bill Hicks, who was discussing Judas Priest and the subliminal messages controversy.
